What to Pack for Fall Finger Lakes Travel

Fall in the Finger Lakes can be mercurial…literally.  The mercury rises and falls without warning and one day the weather will be mild and sunny, the perfect Indian summer day, and two days later, it might be cold and rainy. So if you’re coming here during the fall, you’ll want to pack layers. Let’s assume you’re here for a weekend of leisure. This list can also be adapted for business purposes and shorter or longer stays.

  1. One or more short sleeve shirts (in case it’s unseasonably warm)
  2. One or more long sleeve shirts or turtlenecks
  3. One sweater, blazer, jacket or sport coat
  4. One windbreaker or rain coat
  5. An umbrella
  6. Sun glasses
  7. One or more pair of comfortable walking shoes
  8. One to two pairs of jeans or pants (women may wish to pack a casual skirt)

Optional:

  • A light pair of gloves
  • A hat
  • A light scarf

Weekend attire in the Finger Lakes region is fairly casual and very few restaurants require that men wear a sport coat to dine.  Unless you’re here to attend a wedding or special event, leave your Sunday best at home!

Have suggestions of clothing I’ve left out?  Please comment on what you’d bring.

Practical suggestions indeed, Carol. Don’t forget to add long johns – I prefer ones made of a silk blend as they’re lightweight so that I never feel “bulked up” and they add an incredible layer of warmth!

Great idea! I didn’t think of them because I don’t own a pair, but the thinness, yet warmth would make them a perfect addition! Thank you for the suggestion.
